Business, finance & PM
Project management (CAPM/PMP, Scrum, Google PM), quality (ASQ Six Sigma), IT service (ITIL), and the finance ladders โ CFA, CFP, CPA, FINRA SIE โ with the free on-ramps.
Intuit
Free self-paced online courses followed by an exam, after which "you will receive a badge that you can easily display." Intuit positions it as the way to "Start your career as a remote tax preparer or bookkeeper," seasonal or year-round. The common misunderstanding: the badge is not a CPA, an Enrolled Agent credential, or a state licence, and completing it does not guarantee Intuit hires you โ its worth outside the Intuit ecosystem is modest.
โ A vendor badge, not a licence โ its real value is that it is Intuit's own hiring pipeline for remote tax-prep and bookkeeping roles

Internal Revenue Service
COST: Free to volunteers (no fee published; the cost is a volunteer service commitment). Self-paced IRS e-learning with certification tests at Basic, Advanced, Puerto Rico, Foreign Student and Scholar, Military and International levels (the last two require Advanced first); Circular 230 professionals may instead take the Federal Tax Law Update Test. You certify in order to prepare returns free of charge for low-to-moderate-income and elderly taxpayers at a community site. The common misunderstanding: this is a VOLUNTEER certification with a real service commitment attached โ you cannot take it, skip the volunteering, and call yourself an IRS-certified preparer. What it genuinely buys you is documented, supervised return-preparation experience that paid roles ask for.
โ IRS-issued volunteer certification; the standard credible entry point for hands-on tax-return experience, and Circular 230 professionals can earn CE through the programme

HubSpot
Genuinely free end to end โ HubSpot states "Completely free & online," and the flow is complete all lessons, pass the assessment, earn your certificate. Tracks include Social Media Marketing, Digital Marketing, Content Marketing, Inbound Sales, Sales Hub Software, Digital Advertising and Revenue Operations. The common misunderstanding: treating it as equivalent to an accredited credential. It is not โ it is proof you can operate the tooling and speak the vocabulary, which is exactly what entry-level ops and marketing roles screen for.
โ Widely recognised inside marketing/sales/RevOps hiring as a signal of tool fluency; it is a vendor certification, not an accredited qualification

U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship (employer-sponsored)
Paid entry into finance without a degree: DOL lists General Insurance Associate, Bank Teller, Customer Service Representative, Operations Assistant and Risk Consultation as registered occupations, and reports over 6,248 apprentices served in financial services in 2024 โ a 359% increase over five years. The common misunderstanding: that finance is closed to anyone without a four-year degree. It is the fastest-growing apprenticeship sector by percentage, and it is still small enough that few applicants know it exists.
โ DOL Certificate of Completion, nationally portable; sponsors are banks, insurers and financial firms
